Ghana's beating heart is sure to inspire love letters. The capital's markets are flush with color and activity, and local vendors are as likely to engage in a lengthy conversation as they are to sell you a bolt of vibrant Ghanaian fabric.
Formed from the merger of distinct settlements around British Fort James, Dutch Fort Crêvecoeur (Ussher Fort), and Danish Fort Christiansborg as Jamestown, Usshertown, and Christiansborg respectively, Accra served as the capital of the British Gold Coast between 1877 and 1957 and has since transitioned into a modern metropolis. The capital's architecture reflects this history, ranging from 19th-century colonial architecture to modern skyscrapers and apartment blocks.
Accra is the Greater Accra Region's economic and administrative hub, and serves as the anchor of the larger Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA), which is inhabited by about 4 million people, making it the thirteenth-largest metropolitan area in Africa. In 2020, the Globalization and World Cities Research Network think tank designated Accra as a "Gamma ?" level global city, indicating a growing level of international influence and connectedness.

Cape Coast Castle is the largest of the buildings which contains the legacy of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Like most ancient fortifications in Ghana, Cape Coast Castle played a significant role in the gold and slave trades. But also, two significant contributions were made here: the arrival of Christianity, and the establishment of the first formal education system through Castle Schools.
A guided tour of the Cape Coast Castle will acquaint you with its many interesting features including Dalzel Tower, the slave dungeons, and the cannons and mortars used in the Castle’s defense. The West African Historical Museum is located inside Cape Coast Castle and contains a growing collection of art and cultural objects, including ceremonial drums, old muskets, shackles from the slave trade and ancient pottery.
History
The best history tells us that the Dutch lost control of a fortification to Swedish adventurers in 1652, who name it Fort Carolusburg. Ownership changed numerous times, both among local peoples and various European powers, until finally, in 1664, after a four-day battle, the fort was captured by the British and re-named Cape Coast Castle. The Castle served as the seat of the British administration in the then Gold Coast (Ghana) until the administration was moved to Christianborg Castle in Accra on March 19,1877.
‘Cabo Corso,’ meaning ‘short cape’, is the name the Portuguese settled on for the local settlement within which its trade lodge was built in 1555. Its corruption to ‘Cape Coast’ is now the accepted name of the capital of the Central Region of Ghana. The Swedes, led by Krusenstjerna, however, were the initiators of the permanent structure presently known as Cape Coast Castle. They built a fort in 1653 and named it Carlousburg, after King Charles X of Sweden.
Its proximity to St. George’s Castle (Elmina Castle) and its sheltered beach were all forceful ‘pull factors’ for European nations to the Cape Coast. In addition, the immense viability of the area’s trade implied that the ensuing quest for control led to the Swedes having trouble holding on to their fort. It was captured in turn by the Danes and the local Fetu chief.
Dutch occupation commenced in 1660. Finally, the British fleet, led by Captain Holmes, conquered the fort in 1665 and by 1700, had upgraded it into a castle.
Colonial rivalry between England and France peaked in 1757 during the Seven Years’ War. A French naval squadron bombarded Cape Coast Castle, leaving it badly damaged, and after 1760, the English reconstructed the castle entirely – with more durable materials and an improved sea defence system.
The English retained control of the Castle into the late 19th century. The slave trade was principal until its ban in 1807 by the British, and it ‘is estimated that around 1700, the Royal African Company was exporting some 70,000 slaves per annum to the New World’ . After 1807, trade centred on precious metals, ivory, corn and pepper. In the eighteenth century, the castle’s role altered, as it became the centre of European education in Ghana.

Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square, is a major and important public square, located in the heart of the capital city of the Republic of Ghana, Accra.
Commissioned by the first prime minister and president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, to honor the visit of Queen Elizabeth II, it was constructed in 1961 and so far it has been used for all major national public gatherings and national festivals, in addition to the most important event which is the parade for Ghana’s Independence Day.
Due to the immense size of the square, which is one of the biggest ones in the world, it boasts also the Independence Arch, the Black Star Monument, also known as the Black Star Gate, together with the Memorial of the Unknown Soldier that faces the Independence Arch symbolizing the Ghanaian heroes who lost their lives fighting for Ghana’s independence.
In the vicinity, there is also the Accra Sports Stadium, as well as the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and the Asomdwe Park which is the final resting place of the Late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills. As there are stands all around the square that are holding the capacity of 30,000 spectators, the Black Star Square is definitely one of the most important places that deserve to be seen in person when visiting Ghana.
The DuBois Centre for Pan African Culture was established by the government of Ghana in 1985 to honour the memory of Dr. DuBois as well as promote his Pan African ideas. What is now the museum was actually the house he lived in when in Ghana.
Dr. DuBois was referred to as the "Father of Pan Africanism" for organizing several Pan African congresses in the early half of the last century.
The most significant among them was the 1945 congress in Manchester. This congress paved the way for Africa's independence from colonialism.
Two key organizers at the conference were George Padmore and Kwame Nkrumah who was to lead Ghana to independence in 1957 becoming her first prime minister and then president in 1960 when Ghana became a republic.
In 1961 Nkrumah invited Dr.DuBois to Ghana to take charge of the Encyclopedia Africana project.
Dr. DuBois accepted the invitation and became first director of the Encyclopedia Africana project, made Ghana his home and became a Ghanaian citizen.
In 1963 Dr.DuBois died at the age of 95.

House 8115, Vilakazi Street, Orlando, Soweto, has become one of the most famous addresses in South Africa. It is the house where former South African President Nelson Mandela lived, on and off, for more than 14 years. In his landmark autobiography,?The Long Walk to Freedom,?Mandela describes coming back here in 1990 upon his release after 27 years in prison: 'That night I returned with Winnie [his then-wife] to No. 8115 in Orlando West. It was only then that I knew in my heart I had left prison. For me No. 8115 was the centre point of my world, the place marked with an X in my mental geography.'
Vilakazi Street is the only street in the world to have housed 2 Nobel laureates ? the other being Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. In 1961, Nelson Mandela left No. 8115 for life on the run as a political activist. He was arrested and imprisoned in 1962. From April 2008 to March 2009, the Mandela House was closed for repairs and restoration. Now, No. 8115 has been entrenched as one of South Africa’s most significant heritage sites because it tells the tale, in sound, film, interpretive panels and guided tours, of the Mandela family during the apartheid era and beyond.
You can still walk around the interior of the house as before, but now there is a highly narrative element to your experience, which is enhanced by the addition of a visitor centre. Staff at Mandela House allow 20 visitors in at a time for ease of access. The Mandela House is managed by the Soweto Heritage Trust, which was formed in 1997 with then-President Nelson Mandela as its founder.
Travel to Soweto, short for South West Township, a sprawling cluster of townships on the South West of Johannesburg. Get a panoramic city view from the footbridge of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and the largest hospital in Africa. Next stop is Nelson Mandela's humble house in Orlando West, Mandela House Museum, containing an eclectic assortment of memorabilia, paintings and photographs of the Mandela family, and a collection of honorary doctorates bestowed on Mandela. Catch a glimpse of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s mansion in an affluent part of Orlando West, also where Archbishop Tutu and the Sisulu residences are located. Visit the Hector Pieterson Memorial, in memory of those who died in the Student Uprising of June ’76.
